Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and security chiefs on Monday began the review of the report of the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
The meeting, which was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, came amid increasing security challenges and the urgency for the Federal Government to find workable ways to cut the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari had at the last National Security Council meeting, asked Osinbajo to preside over the review committee.
Speaking during the opening session of the meeting on Monday, the vice president called for the need to find “clear-cut” and immediate actions against the proliferation of light weapons.
The North-East was identified as a key destination of small arms and light weapons, used by Boko Haram terrorists to unleash havoc on defenceless Nigerians.
The session was attended by the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.).
Others, who attended the meeting, were the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu; Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai-Abubakar; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Usman; Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama; Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Col Hameed Ali (retd.); and the Chairman of PRESCOM, Ambassador Emmanuel Imohe.
The Department of State Services and the Ministry of Defence were represented at the meeting.
