The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has nominated the Editor-in-Chief and Senior Vice Chairman of Leadership Media Group, Azu Ishiekwene, for the 2026 Media Leadership Excellence Award.
In a formal notification, the council said the nomination forms part of activities lined up for the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week, scheduled to hold on May 19, 2026, in Abuja.
According to the NUJ, Ishiekwene’s nomination is in recognition of his “outstanding professional contributions to the practice of journalism,” as well as his commitment to ethical reporting and consistent efforts in promoting credible, balanced, and impactful storytelling in the public interest.
The council further noted that his work reflects a strong dedication to truth, accountability, and responsible journalism, contributing significantly to public awareness and the strengthening of democratic values in Nigeria.
“Through his reporting and editorial contributions, he has continued to uphold the core principles of the journalism profession while inspiring confidence in the role of the media in nation-building,” the statement said.
The Media Leadership Excellence Award is one of the key recognitions of the NUJ FCT Press Week, designed to honour journalists who have distinguished themselves through excellence, integrity, and commitment to the highest professional standards. Selection for the award is based on professional assessment, industry reputation, and the broader societal impact of recipients’ work.
The statement is jointly signed by Grace Ike, Chairman, NUJ FCT Council and Obas Esiedesa, Chairman, Planning Committee.
