He started his career as a journalist first with the Daily Service in 1949 then later with the Nigerian Tribune.

He established Lagos State University LASU in 1983 with Professor Folabi Olumide as the Pioneer Vice Chancellor

He established the State Ferry Services Corporation which immediately acquired its own fleet of boats.

He ensured that members of his family went to the same state-run schools and hospitals provided by the government.
