Appeal Court Upholds Maryam Sanda’s Death Sentence

A three-man panel of the court led by Justice Stephen Adah, in a judgment on Friday afternoon, dismissed Sandra’s appeal for lacking in merit.

Appeal Court Upholds Maryam Sanda’s Death Sentence

The Court of Appeal has upheld a Federal High Court ruling that imposed the death sentence on Maryam Sanda, who was convicted for killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

A three-man panel of the court led by Justice Stephen Adah, in a judgment on Friday afternoon, dismissed Sandra’s appeal for lacking in merit.

Sanda had appealed the sentence imposed on her by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal High Court on January 27, 2020 for Bello’s murder.

She faced a two-count charge of murder and culpable homicide.

Halilu in his ruling said, “She should reap what she has sown, for it has been said that ‘thou shall not kill’ and whoever kills in cold blood deserves death as his own reward.

“The Convict also clearly deserves to die, accordingly I hereby sentence Maryam Sanda to death by hanging until she dies.”

Sanda in her appeal described the ruling as a miscarriage of justice suggesting there was no witness or evidence to warrant her conviction.
