The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Social Development Secretariat (SDS) on Tuesday evacuated 17 mentally challenged persons within the city centre to rid the nation’s capital of human nuisance.
Malam Sani Amar, the Acting Director, Social Welfare Services of the SDS, who led the evacuation exercise, said that the secretariat would continue to intensified efforts to evacuate all environmental nuisance in the territory.
He explained that the mentally challenge persons would be taken to the FCT Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre at Bwari Area Council for profiling, which usual take weeks.
“Our medical personnel will treat their physical health if need be they will be taken to the hospital and which we will now study their situation to see those that will undergo psychosocial therapy.
“And, those that requires psychiatric medical treatment will be refer to Psychiatric Hospital in Kano State,” Amar said.
He stated that the exercise was in furtherance to sanitise the Federal Capital City street based on the instruction of the FCT Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Aliyu.
The director explained that enforcement team went to the city to ensure that there was no beggar, mentally challenge, drug addict and other general human nuisance in the territory.
” Indeed the outing was fruitful because you were evident, you witnessed what we have seen when we gone round the city.
” Virtually, there is serious reduction of beggars. In fact we didn’t meet or see a single beggar that shows the impact of the enforcement activities.
” And, what we are able to come across are only mentally challenge persons and drug addicts..
Amar said that there was no room for evil perpetrators, traffickers of underage children that are being subjected to hawking of groundnuts and those that are being exposed into prostitution in the city.
He said that FCTA Social Development Secretariat under the leadership of Dr Kevin Ike, would ensure the execution of the mandate of the secretariat to ensure clean city Federal Capital comparable to any capital city in the world.
