Nigeria’s Foremost Legal Luminary, Richard Akinjide Is Dead

He served as attorney general and minister of justice during the administration of President Shehu Shagari in the second republic.

Chief Richard Akinjide, a former Attorney General of the Federation has died at the age of 88.

Akinjide, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) also served as Minister of Education, during the government of Alhaji Tafawa Balewa in the First Republic.

The late Chief Akinjide attended Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife in Osun State.

He also studied at the University of London in the United Kingdom where he got an LLB in Law.

He was called to the English Bar in 1955 and later to the Nigerian Bar.

Soon after, Chief Akinjide founded his law firm, Akinjide & Co.

He was a member of a sub-committee of the constitutional drafting committee of 1975.

Akinjide joined the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in 1978.

He served as attorney general and minister of justice during the administration of President Shehu Shagari in the second republic.

Chief Akinjide was also a chieftain in the Olubadan of Ibadan’s court.
