International Dance Day

When: April 29, 2016

Where: Paris & Worldwide

Shakiti Bobo, Shoki, Azonto, Skelewu, Etighi, Alanta, Yahooze, Galala, SuO, Makossa all readily come to mind when dance is mentioned in Nigeria. But International Dance Day was initiated in 1982 by the International Dance Council (CID) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a distinguished choreographer that brought about significant reforms in ballet production.

This special day is essentially about promoting the art of dance around the world. It is all about the history of dance and the recognition of its place in society. Besides all these, dance is a method of communication in cultures around the world, and is practised by millions of people.

Every April 1, a message from an outstanding choreographer or dancer is circulated throughout the world. Just Google ’International Dance Day Message’ and see the 2016 message for yourself.

Together with the World Dance Alliance, International Theatre Institute (ITI) and its Dance Committee, UNESCO celebrates International Dance Day in Paris.

Celebrate this International Dance Day by learning about the history of dance, or perhaps even learning a new dance yourself or with a group of friends! It’s a great excuse to sign up for those dance classes you have always fancied.

What’s more? You can stage a performance, organize non-stop dance classes, explain or speak about dance, exhibit collections of costumes, photographs, accessories, postcards etc. You can also write an article and send it for publication to a magazine or a newspaper. Or simply write a poem; make a dance blog and or use Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to circulate your dance photos and videos.

Global Health Catalyst Summit

When: April 29-30, 2016

Where: Boston, US

Inspiring talks, productive international panel discussions, knowledge sharing, awards, networking, and new partnerships in the global war on cancer are on the template of the Global Health Catalyst (GHC) Summit at Harvard’s Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

This premier event will promote high impact international collaborations to eliminate global health disparities. This year, the main focus is on cancer: the emerging field of global radiation oncology, cancer prevention and advocacy.

The organisers dream that one day cancer will be eradicated, and that people of all socio-economic, racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds will have access to quality healthcare. The event will incorporate complementary sessions in other oncology areas, enhanced by complementary outreach to industry, non-profits, policy makers, and the public.

The summit promises to deliver on laying bare the growing global burden of cancer and the cancer divide – disparities in cancer care, research and education. And new low cost technologies and related research and development that can help increase access to cancer care
