The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has described the death of Prof. Jibril Aminu, former Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989–1992) as an irreparable loss of a legislator and scholar.
The condolence message was signed by Mr. Christopher Ugwuegbulam, Head, Press and Public Relations on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.
Aminu was reported to have died on Thursday at the age of 85.
Ugwuegbulam said that the Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobir and his counterpart Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo (Gas) conveyed a heartfelt condolence message to the nation.
According to him, the the Permanent Secretary, Dr Vitalis Obi, Directors and entire staff of the ministry also sent their condolences.
“The ministry of Petroleum Resources deeply regret to announce the passing of Prof. Jibril Aminu, former Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
“His death marks the end of an era of integrity, excellence and dedication to national development.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the government and people of Adamawa State, and all Nigerians mourning this irreparable loss,” he said.
He described Aminu as a distinguished statesman, scholar, diplomat, legislator and patriot.
Aminu’s tenure as minister was marked by visionary leadership and transformative reforms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, laying a solid foundation for the country’s energy policies.
“His tenure as the Minister of Petroleum, to a very large extent, played a significant role in the creation of the Ministry for Solid Minerals Development,” he said.
He said beyond his ministerial achievements, Aminu’s lifelong commitment to public service as an academic, ambassador, senator, and elder statesman left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.
“We pray that Almighty God grants his family and the nation the strength to bear this great loss, and may his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
“His legacy of service, intellect and patriotism will continue to inspire generations,” he said
Aminu held key international positions, including President of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (1991) and President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Conference (1991–1992).
