Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, has been elected the first female director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

She beat her only remaining competitor, South Korea’s trade minister, Yoo Myung-hee by winning 104 of 164 votes of member states.

The European Union had only a few days ago thrown its weight behind her candidacy.

Okonjo-Iweala, a former managing director of the World Bank becomes the first African to lead the WTO.

The WTO is expected to formerly announce a new director general next month.
