ECOWAS heads of states and governments have set up a committee led by the president of Burkina Faso, Christian Kabore to investigate to closure of Nigeria’s land borders with its neighbours.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in statement on Monday said the decision was reached late on Sunday at an extraordinary session of ECOWAS leaders, chairman by President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger Republic and convened on the sidelines of the 33rd AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to the statement, the meeting also discussed West Africa’s new single currency, the Eco and the situation in Guinea Bissau after the presidential election.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama was quoted as saying there was no timelines for the committee is submit its report on the border closure but President Kabore is expected to start very quickly, study the situation from all the affected countries and present his report.
On the Eco currency, Onyeama said nothing has changed in respect of Nigeria’s position and that the convergence criteria have not been met by majority of the countries, therefore there has to be an extension of time on the takeoff.
