Malnutrition, Major Cause Of Infant Mortality In Nigeria – Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, said on Thursday that malnutrition was a very serious issue in Nigeria, and that it’s responsible for 53 per cent of the country’s infant mortality.

Sanusi is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria spoke to journalists in Abuja after attending an expanded session of the National Economic Council.

Sanusi stated, “The seriousness of the nutrition problem is basically responsible for 53 per cent of the infant mortality problem we have in Nigeria.”

He called for adequate funding and provision of structures to address the problem.

The royal father added, “The very high rate of malnutrition among children and women and the need to set up structures and have proper funding and enlightenment and awareness to address these problems and the reception was very positive.

“The governors recognised the seriousness of these problems; many of them have seen the numbers; they are alarming.”

The Minister of State, Health, Senator Olurunnimbe Mamora, who was also at the meeting gave a presentation of government’s efforts to tame Lassa Fever and Coronavirus.
